A Little History
The Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919, in Kansas City, Missouri, by a young man named Frank S. Land.
Mr. Land was a community leader who, at the age of 28, already had a successful business career as a restaurateur behind him. In March, 1919, Land met with young Louis Lower. Louis' father had died, leaving the young man without a father figure in his life. Land took the time to listen to Louis, learn about his dreams, and to help him.
He learned that others, like Louis, sought companionship, leadership, inspiration and competition. He asked Louis to invite some friends to a meeting, the original group of nine DeMolays: Louis G. Lower, Ivan M. Bentley, Edmund Marshall, Gorman A. McBride, Jerome Jacobson, William W. Steinhilber, Elmer Dorsey, Clyde C. Stream, and Ralph Sewell. At the second meeting, there was a total of 31 young men present. They were excited about their new club! The group needed its own identity and its own name. After Dad Land related the story of Jacques DeMolay, the group decided to name itself for this historical figure connected with Masonry.
The Significance Of Friday The 13th

Friday the 13th, October 13, 1307. On that day, the pope of the Roman Catholic Church, in combination with the king of France, sentenced the Knights Templar to death and ordered the torture and crucifixion of their leader, James of Molay (French: Jacques de Molay) was the 23rd and last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, leading the Order from April 20, 1292 until the Order was dissolved by order of Pope Clement V in 1312. In 2001, a document known as the "Chinon Parchment" was found in the Vatican Secret Archives, apparently after having been filed in the wrong place in 1628. It is a record of the trial of the Templars and shows that Clement absolved the Templars of all heresies in 1308 before formally disbanding the Order in 1312.[38]
It is currently the Roman Catholic Church position that the medieval persecution of the Knights Templar was unjust; that there was nothing inherently wrong with the Order or its Rule; and that Pope Clement was pressured into his actions by the magnitude of the public scandal and the dominating influence of King Philip IV.[39][40]

The Seven Cardinal Virtues
Our Order is deeply rooted in seven glorious lights, the cardinal virtues of our Order which are Filial Love, Reverence for Sacred Things, Courtesy, Comradeship, Fidelity, Cleanliness and Patriotism. Each of us in DeMolay keep these principles and teachings alive for the next generation of DeMolays to come.
How do I join DeMolay?
To join DeMolay you first need to find a chapter close to you. If you are close to our chapter, you can print out the Application for Membership and either bring it by the lodge, or give it to an advisor or DeMolay to bring (if you know one). Our usual meetings are on Wed. nights at the Pasadena Masonic Lodge Building, in Pasadena, Texas (see address and map at Home Page). If you have trouble getting the petition to print, we have them at the lodge building as well. You will need to find two DeMolays and a Master Mason to sponsor you. That's a good reason to come to one of our meetings if you don't already know some DeMolays.
Once you are accepted for membership you will be Obligated or Inducted into the chapter (see the section of this site entitled The Induction Cermony to learn more about it).
Download the Application for Membership (PDF Format)
If you don't live close to our chapter, then you can check the Texas DeMolay website, or contact DeMolay International to find a chapter close to you.
