What Is Rainbow

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (called IORG, or Rainbow) is a non-profit, fraternal youth service organization open to all girls between the ages of 11-20. Rainbow provides an environment where girls gain self-confidence and self-respect. Rainbow teaches leadership skills, service to the community, and respect for all. Girls have a chance to achieve and excel, fostering self-esteem in fun and exciting ways.

Rainbow Girls have many fun activities and opportunities to make lifelong friendships. Rainbow gives girls a wide variety of opportunities and experiences. Members earn awards for their activities they participate in, and scholarships and grants are available for those seeking higher education.

Members of Rainbow are active in their schools, communities and churches. They raise money for various charities and they extend themselves in service to their communities and their sponsoring organizations. Many girls go on to become leaders in all fields of employment.  The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls is affiliated only with the Masonic Lodges, Order of the Eastern Star Chapters, and Courts of Amaranth. It is not a religion, cult or secret order. While many groups and organizations use "rainbow" in their title or organizational name, IORG is NOT connected with any other group.

IORG has an active membership of 275,000 girls worldwide with over one million majority members. It is represented in 45 states and in nine foreign countries. Girls from Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, Brazil, Bolivia, Aruba, Japan, Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands, Canada and Germany enjoy the same privileges of the Order as the girls in the United States.

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls was established in McAlester, Oklahoma in 1922. The guidelines and ceremonies of Rainbow were written by W. Mark Sexson, a 33-degree Mason, a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma and a Past Grand Patron, of the Order of the Eastern Star in Oklahoma.

What Do We Do?

We do various things for the community and for charity.  Our Girls pride themselves on the amount of charity work that they do. From delivering gift baskets to shut in, Helping our Masons on a stated meeting night to organizing charity donations and drives to help the homeless and needy. You name it and our girls do it. for a list of some of the charities that we are involved in world wide just follow this link  to see all the organizations that benefit from our help.  http://www.gorainbow.org/greatworks/greatworks.taf

Our Rainbow History and Beginnings

In 1922, Rainbow was created for young women whose fathers were members of the Masonic Lodge, and their friends. Although a Christian minister named W. Mark Sexson founded the organization, today the leaders of Rainbow Girls respect and welcome all girls from every religion. Their main focus is more on the spiritual principles of being a kind and caring person. While the Rainbow practices and programs continue to evolve, the basic teachings of faith, hope, and charity remain a cornerstone of this dynamic girl’s youth group.

Today, there are more than 850 assemblies across the world that have bimonthly meetings. This is how the members learn standard meeting protocol and parliamentary procedure.
Adults are always present to provide support, guidance, and help interpret the rules. Members also learn to memorize meaningful lectures and to be prepared for extemporaneous speeches. Some meetings conclude with a presentation or unique entertainment.

In addition, members and advisors work on different service projects throughout the year.
Since November of 1951, world headquarters for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls has been located in McAlester, Oklahoma. This magnificent building was constructed for Rainbow Girls and funded by Rainbow Girls. It represents what can be accomplished when girls are empowered with knowledge, enlightened by travel, and energized by their own inner spirit.

In the book of Genesis, after the flood, God made a covenant with people that He would never again destroy the earth, and placed a Rainbow in the heavens as a symbol of that covenant. The Reverend Mark Sexson, our Founder, believed that this symbol of God's love was an appropriate symbol for the Order, so the Rainbow and its colors provided the inspiration for both the International Order of The Rainbow for Girls and for the lessons that are taught in the ceremonies of the Order through these colors of the Rainbow.
